This has been the worst start to a new fishing season in years. I honestly can’t remember when I have had a more disappointing opening day. Pouring rain and high water contributed to the dismal conditions, but the lack of fish was the final nail in the coffin. Due to the late ice-out in our local ponds Fish and Game was unable to stock most of the ponds close to home.

During the evening, Friday and early morning Saturday, torrential downpours made for a late start to the day. Instead of arriving at the pond in the predawn hours, my son and I did not get on the water until after 6 a.m. Only one other angler bothered to show up while we were there. Knowing full well that the pond had not been stocked, we were indeed on a fool’s errand.
