Analyzing the town meeting results in Conway would have been a lot easier had the budget committee been abolished. Then, at least, one might simply conclude that a significant proportion of those who voted on April 10 want no more financial oversight for either the town or the school district. That was the resounding message, after all: henhouse watchdogs were replaced with foxes (or foxes were continued on duty), and voters cheerfully added about a million and a half in special articles to the main school budget. Despite over a million dollars in savings on health insurance, special education, and debt service, the school budget still rose 1.2 percent for next year, and we authorized contracts that will incur even more expenditures the year after that.
