The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department recently turned down Ossipee selectmen’s request to allow swimming at the department-owned boat launch on Connor Pond. In a letter sent in July, the selectmen said motorized boats are banned there, it has been a swimming area for visitors and residents for years “and it would be a shame to lose this privilege.” Even Gov. Chris Sununu weighed in, saying, “A one-size-fits-all regulation is usually never the best idea at the state level,” while adding, “I can’t force Fish and Game to do anything.” But the department said for safety reasons, its regulations prohibit swimming at all public boat access areas, and it won’t make any exceptions.
This week’s Tele-talk question: Do you think state Fish and Game should be more flexible with its regulations when local residents petition the department to swim in their own local swimming holes?
