On the Nov. 3 ballot is a state-mandated question asking voters to consider a tax cap that requires a 60 percent majority to pass. The tax cap targets school property taxes and, if passed, would limit the SAU 9 budget increase to 6 percent. For towns, the allowable increase is computed by adding the yearly percentage of inflation plus the percentage increase in the value of taxable property. This means if inflation is 3 percent and the value of taxable property in a town increases by 1.5 percent, the school budget increase would be capped at 4.5 percent.
