To the editor:

Recently, Laura Slitt had some concerns about children using painful hooks to catch fish at an outing, and said how bad that was That reminded me of a poem we used to read to recite as youngsters.

"Mr. Chrenko thinks his youthful fishing never harmed his view of the world but apparently it did as, plainly, he is lacking empathy, compassion and sensibility."

Really? Are you able to divine that from a few paragraphs of someone's opinion that is different from yours?

Are you so confident in your ideas of how we should be conducting our lives? Perhaps you are the one lacking empathy, understanding, and yes, even compassion. You completely invalidated what some might consider their best childhood memories with their families.

I believe in the order of the hierarchy and empathy spectrum humans should take priority.

Now, I know you will think that means to the exclusion of all other life forms, which it does not. But when you start putting animals, insects, and plants before humans you might need to do some inner self-examination about your own interactions and relationships with people.

Having empathy for animals is easy, but humans, not so much. That takes real work maturity and emotional growth.

Dominion over the Earth and its lifeforms means stewardship, not the abusive use of animals and natural resources that have led us to the brink of a runaway global warming disaster. Time to wake up: resourceism.com

Anyone who is truly interested in the "Why of Veganism" and why it is essential that we stop using, abusing, and consuming animals simply needs to Google: 'Animal Oppression and Human Violence by David Nibert'. If we want peace on Earth, we must stop abusing animals. "As long as there are slaughterhouses, there will be battlefields,'' - Leo Tolstoy #livebevegan

Mr. Chrenko thinks his youthful fishing never harmed his view of the world but apparently it did as, plainly, he is lacking empathy, compassion and sensibility.

While Native Americans and people in biblical times may have needed to fish as a matter of survival, that is not the case for the children for whom Laura Slitt expressed concern. Yes, fishes and other animals, including small ones, can suffer pain, as science has shown. They deserve respect and compassion not gratuitous cruelty (i.e., abuse).

As for Jesus, he is said to have called fishermen away from fishing to follow him instead, and the fishes he is said to have created would have been conjured rather than killed. No genuinely benevolent spirit would approve of needlessly harming sentient beings (i.e., abusing them) nor should anyone else.

Encouraging children to have respect and compassion for animals is a very admirable thing to do. Kudos to Ms. Slitt and shame on Mr. Chrenko for his pathetic attempt to make a mockery of it.
