To the editor:

To correct a couple common misconceptions, especially from the MAGA crowd, here are the facts about whether Donald Trump should be eligible to hold office again and the current state of violent crime in our country.

Using the 14th amendment to deny former President Trump a place on the ballot is undemocratic. What will the Left think of next? How about endless lawsuits with flimsy and novel legal theories to tar him?

But putting that aside, I want to address the claim in the above letter that crime really isn't higher. This is like saying that people who think supermarket (and other) prices are not up because the rate of inflation is currently coming down. That is good for sure, but prices are up about 17% since before the pandemic.

Crime is way too high. Is it because of the uncontrolled border, the soft-on-crime DAs, or the "social justices" changes to law enforcement? Maybe all three. When criminals face no penalties for their behavior, they will do it more.

So here is an article about crime in Chicago. Yes, murder is down in the last few years, but most other crimes are way up. https://news.wttw.com/2024/01/02/shootings-homicides-chicago-drop-13-2023-and-returned-pre-pandemic-levels-violence

But if you look over the last 20 years, murders are much higher than average. So while the number has recently declined, it is still way too high.

People are not crazy to think crime is too high. Don't let the Democrats "gaslight" you into thinking that everything is fine in Biden's America.

No G, keeping Trump off the ballot is following the Constitution, which Trump has continually refused to do. Endless lawsuits with flimsy legal theories? You're thinking of Trump's big lie. The Left isn't suing Trump, the criminal justice system is, because he keeps committing crimes and violating the Constitution. That's following the rule of law and the Constitution; two things the Right claims to do but doesn't when it's their people breaking the law and violating the Constitution.

You might think crime is "way too high", but the point is it's been coming down from it's high in 2020, which was under Trump's administration. Now, unlike the Right when they make ridiculous claims trying to credit Trump with making us energy independent and creating low gas prices, I will say it's not Trump's fault that crime soared during the pandemic. Just like it's not to his credit that gas prices were low and we were energy independent because demand was so low during the pandemic. But, historically, when crime goes up significantly, like during the Civil Rights era, it doesn't come right back down, it continues to be high for a long period of time. Biden got meaningful, albeit not as much as needed, gun control legislation, and that's part of the reason violent crime is coming down. For the right-wingers to keep screaming that crime is "out of control" or that it was the border or your other claims trying to blame DA's or "social justice" changes to law enforcement are just witless talking points with no basis in fact.

Yes, while crime is down around the nation across all levels of town, city , and state size, you can still cherry pick and find some places where it's up. Because the total levels are down dramatically, for every one place you can cherry pick that's up, I can show you several that are down. it's disingenuous to cherry pick one place to try to discount a statistic for a large body like our nation, and only proves your desperation to try to counter the big picture positive with a tiny picture negative because it suits your failed narrative.

Yes, over the last 20 years, I would agree murders have been too high, so why aren't you happy that finally an American president has done something positive to impact that? Why aren't you happy that there's been good news for two consecutive years, with real improvement? Because you're a MAGA cult member, and you just repeat all Trump's lies and try to make it sound like everything's horrible under anyone but Trump. Again, your failed narrative about Biden is more important to you than facts or the well-being of America and Americans.

I didn't say people were crazy to think crime is too high, I said it's not "out of control" as the fools on the Right keep screaming. You've already let Trump and the MAGA clowns gaslight you into believing every lie they spout, so please don't talk to me about anybody fooling me. I never said everything is fine in Biden's America, though it's a far sight better than during Trump's administration. Unlike you, I haven't joined a cult, so I can see Biden's faults as well as what he's doing well.

G_Allen: You lost me at "When criminals face no penalties for their behavior, they will do it more." If that isn't a perfect description of why the twice-impeached, proven sexual-abuser, one-term, serial liar, disgraced ex-president is facing 91 indictments, I don't know what is.

Bravo! That needed to be said. Thank you.
