To the editor:

I remember when President Barack Obama proposed Merrick Garland as a Supreme Court justice to replace the late Antonin Scalia. Garland was neither liberal nor conservative and would have balanced the court. But Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) refused to even consider Garland, choosing to wait until the election of 2016, which Donald Trump had little chance of winning when Obama made his proposal.
