To the editor:

Historian David Lowenthal differentiated between history and heritage. He argued that "History seeks to convince by truth, and succumb to falsehood." Meanwhile, heritage "exaggerates and omits, candidly invents and frankly forgets, and thrives on ignorance and error." The claim that the United States was founded on Christian principles is one of those myths about our founding that falls under heritage rather than history.
