To the editor:

There are too many inaccuracies and misstatements in Ken D'Amico's letter to the editor in the July 2 issue of The Conway Daily Sun to address in this letter, but I would like to put to rest his assertion that Nancy Pelosi as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives on Jan. 6, 2021, had any authority to call up the District of Columbia National Guard.

Yet another Democrat myth that can be disproven. But why let facts and truth get in the way?

On May 20th Reuters reported, “President Donald Trump wanted National Guard troops in Washington to protect his supporters at a Jan. 6 rally.

Former Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller told a House of Representatives panel that he spoke with Trump on Jan. 3.

According to Miller's testimony, Trump asked during that meeting whether the District of Columbia's mayor had requested National Guard troops for Jan. 6, the day Congress was to ratify Joe Biden's presidential election victory.

Trump told Miller to "fill" the request. Miller said Trump told him: "Do whatever is necessary to protect demonstrators that were executing their constitutionally protected rights."

Representative Carolyn Maloney, the Democrat who chairs the committee, demanded answers from Miller on why National Guard troops did not arrive until hours after the building was overrun.

Miller testified that the U.S. military was deliberately restrained that day, “… he was concerned in the days before Jan. 6 that sending National Guard troops to Washington would fan fears of a military coup”

Subsequently, the Subcommittee posted a video from January 6, 2021, which was recorded by Alexandra Pelosi and provided directly to the Subcommittee. In the video, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated "I take responsibility for the security failures”, of the Capitol that day.

As Nancy Pelosi was being evacuated from the Capitol on January 6, 2021 she admitted that, as Speaker of the House, she was responsible for the security failures, and for not having the National Guard at the Capitol.

This video shows Pelosi in a moment of leadership acknowledging that as Speaker of the House it was her responsibility to ensure the safety of Members of Congress that day and every other day.
