With an Auto Zone store five years ago replacing the Homestead Restaurant — a structure built by Revolutionary War veteran Amos Barnes — and the planned demolition of another 1700s-era home in Center Conway, it is understandable that the Conway Planning Board has gone on high alert when faced with another big, new, neighborhood-changing project.

That said, we caution planners to be realistic tonight as they continue reviewing the 105-room hotel proposed for the site of the Intervale Motel, located across Route 16 from the Scenic Vista.

Yeah, I don’t hear anyone saying don’t build a hotel. “Hotel, like it or not” feels like a straw man here. What I hear is, don’t build a hotel that is severely out of character with the neighborhood and what’s around it. That seems reasonable, Master Plan agrees. You can keep your Olive Garden, just don’t build a skyscraper.

I am a property owner in Interval. The location of this hotel was once the prominent destination with many LARGE hotels and the train stop, The Intervale House (with 200 person dinning room), The Bellevue, The Pendexter Mansion and the Langdon House to name a few of the popular lodging destinations. It would be nice to bring some of that tradition back to the area and a roof top restaurant within walking distance and on this end of town would increase current property owners values. Not sure why people would object to that. Further, it would bring more business to the MT Washington Valley Touring Center, and the nearby stores. I think if done astatically, it would be an impressive back drop as you approach North Conway from the north, especially vs the motel that is there now. Think about it, if there was a nice looking hotel, brand new, with roof top restaurant, would you want to tear it down to put in a run down motel? People just resist change even when it is for the best.

Seems like a good time to change the zoning laws to get a better handle on these projects.
