To the editor: The recent letter to the editor by Roger Utley would have made me laugh if it hadn't been so nasty. My husband worked for almost a year to get a Disabled American Veterans van to this area so that he could take veterans to their doctor appointments. He fought and won the right to drive the veterans directly into Jamaica Plains and White River Junction so that they didn't have to get down to Manchester at 7:30 in the morning to catch the shuttle. He was the only driver in this area, and at first drove almost every day before he just couldn't keep that schedule. If Mr. Utley called for a ride, he didn't call here. My husband is not a fisherman. We have been married 49 years and in that time he went fishing once and hated it. I have no idea what Mr. Utley is talking about, but he obviously never spoke to Stan.Frankly, we have been getting calls from people who Stan has helped and they are disturbed by the insinuations that Mr. Utley has made. Early last winter, Stan was decertified because of an erroneous routine medical examination by a nurse at Veterans Affairs. It took an overnight at The Memorial Hospital and two visits to his cardiologist to get him re-certified (all paid for by us). The van was laid up in the snow during those weeks and had to be sent back to Manchester for repairs. Now unless more drivers step forward, there will be no van for the veterans to use. Since the winter, Stan has been driving for RSVP. He was awarded the transportation award at this years RSVP luncheon for his work for veterans. Stan has never stopped volunteering in one way or another for veterans. To dishonor his efforts toward veterans is to dishonor him as a veteran.
