We've probably all heard the story of the mother who called her son to wake up for school, and when he wailed "Oh, Ma, I don't wanna go to school," she insisted "You have to, son; you're the principal." That may not be so much of a joke, in Conway.

Teachers in public schools love to complain about how poorly they're paid, comparing their salaries for a 187-day work year to those of laboring people who still work 232 days a year even if they get four weeks of vacation and paid holidays. The average teacher salary in Conway this year is $58,794 — down about $500 from last year. I was told in January that our current median teacher salary was $48,048. That's $247 a day. Next year it will be $281.
