As civilization and the economy that sustains it advances, each of us becomes more compartmentalized, specialized and ultimately detached from the things that once gave meaning — life, death, food and human connection.

For generations my family has been posted up on a homestead best described as a hobby farm. When the Palmers first settled here in the early 1800s, it was very much a subsistence farm.
