In a Sept. 6 column, I wrote, “Every student promoted from the sixth grade should have an understanding that this nation was built on the rugged determination of men and women who were motivated by the Judeo-Christian faith — and what exactly that faith was, and is.”  

In response, an esteemed local teacher responded on Sept. 11 with  “Every student promoted from the sixth grade should have an understanding that this nation was built on the backs of slaves and the ramifications of this evil are still being felt.”
