When I was a kid, I thought January was an odd time to start a new year, right in the middle of winter. September would be better: Summer vacation is over and we start a whole new year of school. Even grownups are back from vacation, refreshed and ready to ply their trades.

It is January 2026, a year into which America drags all of its 2025 baggage. We wish each other a happy new year but without the usual optimism for a better future. Nevertheless, it is time to make resolutions. Not for me; I am too old and set in my ways to entertain meaningful change. Instead, I propose resolutions for America, a nation in serious need of reform:
