If you’re of a certain age, you watched scores of movies and TV shows that condemned vigilantism: "The Ox-Bow Incident," "Hang-Em High," episodes of "Maverick," "Gunsmoke," "Have Gun Will Travel" (outstanding show), and "Bonanza" all painted the guys looking to hang someone without trial as evil. The sheriff who stands up to the mob, the near victim who hunts down his captors — these are the heroes. In 50s and 60s westerns, it was an article of faith that America gives people a fair trial before exacting the ultimate penalty.

That basic moral test of right and wrong has disappeared based upon recent actions by our federal government. On what evidence has our military been ordered to blow up 22 boats and kill at least 83 people? Perhaps there is some, but we have seen none.
