There have been numerous letters in this paper recently commenting on short-term rentals, both pro and con; I’ve written several. But much that has been said obfuscates the core principle in this debate, and that is the legal right of registered voters in a community to determine how their neighborhoods should be governed.

I am not opposed to short-term rentals in general if they are either owner-occupied and -operated (current zoning in Kearsarge); if they are in a commercial or mixed commercial/residential area of a town; or if the registered voters in a town vote to allow them in residential areas.
