Last week, President Donald Trump ordered the firing of 12 cruise missiles at a site in the Nigerian state of Sokoto under the guise of protecting Christians from terrorist attacks. Typical of Trump, the justification was misleading, untrue and a blunder of significant proportions. To understand why, one must know something about Nigeria and the state of Sokoto.

Nigeria has the largest population in Africa, with slightly more than half of its people being Muslim and slightly less than half being Christian. Most, though not all, Muslims live in the northern part of the country, while most, though not all, Christians reside in the south.
