The July 1 decision of the United States Supreme Court in Donald Trump’s prosecution arising out of the events of Jan. 6, 2020, answers a novel question as Chief Justice John Roberts stated it: “When may a former president be prosecuted for official acts taken during his Presidency? Our nation has never before needed an answer.”

Maybe a reason this has never arisen before is that 27 of our 46 presidents have been lawyers used to the rules and constraints of the law as part of their profession.
