Virginia Moore, who has served as development director at the shelter since July of 2006, has agreed to fill the role as acting executive director. Local police say federal drug agents are attempting to seize a house on 28 Ski Doo Alley in Freedom shared by a suspected small-town drug dealer and his girlfriend. County commissioners address another policy crackdown, condemning the practice of allowing employees to buy personal goods on county books at government rates, and then letting workers reimburse the county. Commissioners say the practice appears to violate state law that prohibits workers from buying on county "credit."Tuesday, October 9 After a legislative proclamation that the future of Mountain View Nursing Home is "one of the most significant" matters facing county government, industry experts fan out across the county home preparing to bid on a consulting job expected to change the face of elderly care. Police commissioners would like to see a school resource officer at Kennett Middle School in addition to one already in place at the high school. Conway School Board will consider the recommendation. Fryeburg Fair posts the fourth best attendance in the fair's 157-year history. A total of 186,754 people paid to get into the eight-day fair. The all-time record is 199,276, set in 2004. In an effort to best serve the students, school officials are going to be tinkering with the starting and release times at Kennett Middle School.Wednesday, October 10 The chairman of Carroll County commissioners, David Sorensen, raises eyebrows across county government by saying he plans to hold budget workshops in private. Sorensen says department heads "are afraid to discuss anything when the papers are there." A mock disaster drill will be held at the new Kennett High School on Saturday. A tribute for the late Gary Millen, former Kennett High football coach and Freedom resident, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Calumet Conference Center in Freedom. After serving on the Conway Fire Department for the past 28 years, retiring chief Larry Wade will be given a retirement celebration by his fellow firefighters Nov. 3 at the Grand Summit David Emerson, of the Conway Historical Society and Conway Public Library, has been named Business Citizen of the Year by the Conway Village Chamber of Commerce.Thursday, October 11 Former state representative Dave Babson filed a right-to-know lawsuit late Wednesday to try to ensure that county commissioner budget workshops are open to the public. Meanwhile, the chairman of the county commission, David Sorensen, backed down from a controversial pledge to take next week's round of budget talks private, but he still refused to release records of a first closed round on Wednesday as news spread hat the county may have to defend the decisions in court. School officials are hinting that the drop-out rate was lower last year than the year before, and will brief the public on the results of the work done by the Mount Washington Valley Task Force for Student Success, Wednesday, October 17. Frank Carroll turns himself in to police on drunk-driving charges dating back 20 years. Vandals kick out windshields at the police impound lot in Ossipee.Friday, October 12 The Fryeburg policeman who singlehandedly collared an armed and paranoid killer without even drawing his sidearm says he's sure Michael Woodbury, a master of eluding police, was pining to shed more innocent blood and go out with a bang. A one-time Massachusetts police officer is waiting to learn his sentence in a local jail cell where he is considered a flight risk after being convicted for snapping his wife's arm in a Jackson Inn. Mount Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce will be honored 12 citizens at White Mountain Treasures at the chamber's annual meeting and dinner Oct. 23.
