(The Center Square) —  Maine Congressman Jared Golden is defending his support for tougher sanctions against Russia after breaking with fellow Democrats to help approve the Republican-backed legislation.

The Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 was approved by the House of Representatives on Wednesday in a 262-159 vote, one day before Congress went on recess ahead of the midterm elections. Graham, who died earlier this year, co-authored and filed the measure more than a year ago. The measure, which passed the Senate last month, is now on President Donald Trump's desk.
