The murder of Steven Hayes was the second overwhelming tragedy to have hit the Hayes family in the last two decades. Steven, 45, of Jackson, was found at Moose Tracks restaurant Wednesday night, stabbed to death. The building had been torched; Hayes' body was found at the top of a smokey stairwell.Early Thursday morning, Bartlett Fire Department responded to another fire on Albany Avenue. The home of Moose Tracks' owner Tony Balliro, 45, was in flames. Balliro was charged with two counts of arson, and was arraigned Friday at Southern Carroll County District Court. Hayes was an employee of Balliro's, having worked as a chef at Moose Tracks for four months, according to a friend. His parents, David and Rosemarie, also live in Bartlett. Steve's death is the second death of a son they have had to endure. In 1983, their 19-year-old son drowned in a rowing accident on the Atlantic Ocean near Durham, N.H. Glenn Hayes was a freshman at the University of New Hampshire, and a member of the university crew team. On a sunny Sunday, according to the Harvard student paper, Hayes rowed down Oyster River and into Great Bay along with over five dozen other atheletes.A wave capsized Hayes' "racing shell," tossing him and 11 peers into the frigid Atlantic water. The other 11 were rescued and treated for hypothermia; Hayes' body was found seven hours later near Greenland, N.H.David and Rosemarie have two other adult sons.
