The first sticking snow had not yet come to the great bend of the Saco River when, on the first Sunday afternoon in December of 1941, local residents with radios learned of the sneak attack on the Navy base at Pearl Harbor.

The news spread anger and anxiety everywhere, but for some, the worry was more personal. A lot of local boys were already in uniform, and many were stationed in Hawaii.
