CHATHAM — Saturday was Barbara Eastman Day in the town of Chatham, and although the point of the celebration was to award a lifetime achievement plaque to the longtime Chatham librarian and historian — which will hang in the new library exhibit  — perhaps the biggest achievement was having it remain a surprise to the recipient.

As her husband, Frank put it later, keeping that a secret from Barbara, “I think, was a first in our 64-year marriage.”
