There are as many definitions of community are there are people within them, but Harvey Dow Gibson got it right in 1949 when he set out to create a brand new public space for his community to gather. Much like his creation, 10 years earlier, of Mount Cranmore and the ski mecca our valley would become, he was always on the lookout for ways to improve his hometown.

Ever the mover and shaker, Gibson’s plans were put to paper in 1949 and the design promised the village of North Conway a central and versatile gathering space for all. Sadly he didn’t live to see it realized, and it was his daughter Whitney who directed the construction and cut the ribbon in 1950. And the rest is North Conway history.
