MOUNT WASHINGTON — The Mount Washington Cog Railway has come a long way — switching much of its fleet to diesel and making technological upgrades — in just the past decade, let alone in the 50 years since a major crash left eight people dead and more than 70 injured.

The 50th anniversary of that tragedy took place Sept. 17, bringing much media attention to the mountaintop railway.
