OSSIPEE — Selectmen’s chair Jonathan Smith, who is also the town’s building inspector, is advocating abolishing the inspector position, saying it causes more bureaucracy and liability than its worth.

As building inspector, Smith had ordered the newly installed Deer Run boardwalk at Constitution Park to be rebuilt to meet Americans With Disabilities Act requirement. As if proving his point about the inspector post not being needed, his fellow selectmen on Tuesday decided there was no need to make those adjustments.
