CONWAY — A large old silver maple at Smith-Eastman Landing, which garnered public support when talk first surfaced about removing it, has been cut down, the town public works director Andrew Smith reported to selectmen Tuesday.

Selectmen Aug. 18 voted 5-0 to have the 300-year-old tree cut down as a safety precaution. They took that vote after hearing from Town Manager John Eastman that Assistant Emergency Services Director Linda Burns told him branches had fallen from it. Smith-Eastman Landing is a popular tubing and kayak put-in on the Saco River.
