Conway Lake Dam

Jim Garland (left) and Brad Gaudreault (right), show fellow Conway Lake resident Jim Salmon how to raise the dam at the lake with a hand crank, which turns a threaded, 10-foot-long shaft to raise or lower a plate at the bottom of the dam. The dam was raised Wednesday morning to flush pollen that accumulated on top of the water. Garland and Goodrow use a drill with a special bit instead of the hand crank when performing their regular duties, which are often in the middle of rainstorms. (MARK GUERRINGUE PHOTO)

CONWAY — Boaters and residents on Conway Lake have been wondering why the lake is lower than usual.

Many have assumed incorrectly that the water level was purposely set low by those in control of the dam at the northern end of the lake on Mill Street in Center Conway.
