CONWAY — As the nation approaches the 200th anniversary of "The Star Spangled Banner" this September, the dramatic events that that led to its creation during the War of 1812 are a little-known, yet gripping story. In "Through the Perilous Fight: From the Burning of Washington to the Star-Spangled Banner: The Six Weeks That Saved the Nation," Steve Vogel outlines the pivotal six weeks in 1814 in which a perilous fight preserved the new nation at a time of grave danger, severed remaining ties with America's colonial past, and inspired the country's most indelible song. Vogel will be at White Birch Books, located in North Conway Village just south of the park, across from TD Bank, on Thursday, July 17, starting at 5 p.m.
