Ross S. MacGregor Sr., 68, of Tamworth died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003 at his home.He was born June 23, 1935, in Manhattan, N.Y., to Ross H. and Ruth (MaGee) MacGregor. He later moved to Rhode Island, where he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1953. He retired from the Navy as senior chief in 1973. Following his retirement, he worked as a commercial fisherman for 15 years at Point Judith, Narragansett, R.I., then moved to his home in Tamworth in 1985.In 1989, he was instrumental in the chartering of Thresher Base Submarine Veterans, where he served as the secretary from its inception.During his service in the Navy, he was commended several times for performance above and beyond the call of duty for recovering fired torpedoes. His special duties also included diving officer and submarine diving officer, and he was with the first sailors to make the historic around-the-world submerged cruise on the USS Triton (SSRN586), a nuclear submarine. His vessels and stations included the Naval Submarine Base in New London, Conn.; the USS Trumpet Fish (SS425); USS Salmon (SSR573); USS Triton; USS Flasher (SSN613); USS Corporal (SS346); the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.; and the USS Cobbler (SS344).He loved the U.S. Navy and took pride in defending his country during Korea and Vietnam.He is a life member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans, Thresher Base Submarine Veterans and a member of the Frank E. Booma, VFW Post, Portsmouth, N.H.He is survived by his loving family, sons Ross S. MacGregor Jr., Point Judith, and Robert MacGregor, Kansas City, Mo.; and a daughter, Sandra Drumheller, Kansas City; grandchildren William Trammell and Kayla Drumheller, Kansas City, and Ross Adams, Rhode Island; a sister, Carolyn Wilbur, and her husband, Bob, and niece Connie Brunnetti, all of Pennsylvania.A military funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Portsmouth VFW Hall, 238 Dee St., Pourtsmouth, N.H., where he was a member and the secretary of the Thresher Base Submarine Veterans. Lord Funeral Home of Center Ossipee assisted the family with the funeral.
