Peter G. Houghtaling of Riverbend Road, Brownfield, Maine, died suddenly on Jan. 8. He was born in Dorchester, Maine, Sept. 26, 1953.He applied his trade as a master carpenter both locally and down the East Coast. He enjoyed outdoor activities and was an avid reader. He also donated his time and financial support to disadvantaged children. As a young man, he found solace and beauty in the mountains of Maine and New Hampshire. A few years ago, with the completion of his house, he finally realized his dream of settling down along the Saco River. He was quick to tell you he was a "Mainer."He loved the river and the nature around him, finding time daily to walk the woods along the Saco, watching the changes the seasons bring, reveling in wonderment of the tiniest wild flower, and watching with amazement the antics of a woodland creature as he crossed their paths. "Winter brings a beauty all its own to the woods here," he said. "There is a peacefulness and serenity you can't find anywhere else."Your winter has come too soon my friend. Sleep peacefully, much as your woodland friends and the wild flowers that you so loved do beneath the blanket of snow that covers the memory of your footsteps on the forest floor. There will be one less ray of sunshine along the Saco, but maybe when we look up in the night sky we will see another star. All that were fortunate enough to have him for a friend will miss Peter. He leaves behind Kathy his companion of many years with whom he shared his dreams, his life and his love. Donations can be made in Peter's name to the Brownfield Public Library Fund, c/o Bill Nunan, P.O. Box 88, Brownfield ME 04010.
