Tom Hutchings will speak and show photos at the Cook Memorial Library in Tamworth on Tuesday, March 15, at 7 p.m. with the program, "Living and Working at the South Pole," giving the audience an insiders view of one of the most remote places on earth. What started out as a once in a lifetime trip to work in Antarctica back in 1990 has now turned into a lifestyle for Tom and his wife, Gloria, who have spent a combined 72 months working on the ice." Tom has recently returned from ten weeks at the South Pole where he is managing the construction and logistics of a multimillion dollar astrophysics research project.Follow along as Tom heads through New Zealand to get to the U.S. Antarctic Programs McMurdo Station and then on to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. He will give a tour of the new station facilities under construction as well as some of the science currently underway. While most have probably seen the beauty of the Antarctic scenery, this is a chance to come along to the interior of this vast continent and see a very different perspective, that of one living and working in Antarctica.Call the library at 323-8510 for more information.
