Hannah N. Schmitt , 85, of Tamworth Village and formerly of Washington, D.C. died April 29 at her sister's home in Tamworth after a prolonged illness. She was born in Paterson, N.J. on Feb. 25, 1918 and after high school worked as a secretary in New York City until the beginning of WWII, when she joined the U.S. Navy.She rose in rank to Chief Petty Officer in the WAVES. Upon discharge, she worked as a legal secretary on Wall Street and then during the '50s and '60s joined the Agency for International Development and was stationed in Tunisia and at the American Embassy in London. Before retirement , she worked for several years as an administrator for the U.S. Park Service at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C . Three years ago, she moved to Tamworth to be near her family and lived independently with limited vision. She is survived by her sisters, Catherine Mersfelder of Tamworth and Gloria Sabanosh of New Jersey; and nine nephews and nieces. A service will be held in New Jersey at a later date.
