The annual meeting of the Conway Village Cemetery Association was recently held at the Conway Village Precinct office and the following officers were elected: Tom Steele, president; Laraine Cormac, vice president; and Gloria Tibbetts, treasurer. Maureen Seavey was elected secretary, replacing Lucille Lucy, who will become the association's historian.Directors elected were Lucille Lucy, Everett De Witt and Ken Williams, and by a change in bylaws voted on at this meeting, a fourth director, Bill Vose, was added to the board. Harold Wieher from the American Legion Post 46 and Maureen Seavey are working on a joint project to organize cemetery records, create a database and update the cemetery map.The Conway Village Cemetery is located just off Washington Street, with a beautiful view of Mount Chocorua and a memorial garden with a flagpole and benches. The memorial garden is dedicated to former caretaker Raymond Banfill. The original part of the cemetery had only 1.2 acres in 1861. The cemetery association was established in January 1872, and the old section of the cemetery has over 400 sites, including more than 100 veterans representing the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and both world wars. The new section has over 400 sites with veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam and current conflicts. At the present time, there are over 90 sites available in varying sizes, from single sites to those that will accommodate eight.
