Most people who prefer driving a manual or “standard” transmission — so-called because, once upon a time, manual transmissions were the standard offering — have strong opinions on their choice of gearboxes.

They might point out an automatic transmission is just another way to disengage the driver from the motoring experience. Perhaps it’s the implied necessary skill or the distrust of technology or the desire for simpler things, but it seems this attitude transcends automobiles.
