Regular readers know my enthusiasm for transportation transcends cars, and this “Wheels” column stretches beyond rubber tires and pavement. Today’s feature could be called “Steel Wheels” — like those that ride on rails.

The early days of rail were a different time, a time of optimism and a quest for unity following the Civil War, as the U.S. was finally connected by the first transcontinental railroad.
