Orthodontics is a continuously evolving specialty. The key is to stick with what works well, but keep an eye on newer technology and techniques that could save time and make the treatment period more efficient for patients and/or their parents.Lately, our specialty has seen an influx of calls for the newer Invisalign system. This treatment modality, which is marketed to adults and late teens, utilizes clear aligners made of a high-tech plastic that hugs each individual tooth. The aligners are systematically formed so that very minor tooth movements can be made when each aligner is placed in the mouth and worn for about 22 hours a day. Over a succession of many aligners, larger tooth movements are possible. This system has been used in our practice since 2001, and is now showing us some favorable results. With all of its attributes, Invisalign can only correct dental or tooth based problems, but not skeletal or jaw based problems. The practice of orthodontics continues to progress in light of some recent research articles. Specifically, orthodontists are waiting to treat some jaw conditions (such as a small lower jaw) until the patient is in the pre-pubertal growth period instead of treating at an earlier age, as in the past. This streamlines the treatment time and focuses on getting the patient into and out of orthodontic care as quickly as possible, while still attaining an ideal finish. This reduces not only the amount of time in treatment, but also the number of times a patients needs to be seen by the orthodontist. There are still other jaw and tooth-based conditions that need to be treated at an earlier age, even by the age of 7, which remains the recommended age to be seen by an orthodontist according to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). Along with changing times comes a change in the demographics of those who are getting orthodontic treatment today. There is a greater percentage of adults seeking orthodontic care. Advances such as Invisalign, clear bracket systems and high-tech super-elastic wires allow more comfort, fashion, efficiency, and predictability than ever before. As orange juice isnt just for breakfast anymore, orthodontics isnt just for kids anymore!Dr. Stephen Saks is an orthodontist with Orthodontic Associates in North Conway and South Portland, Maine.
