Hollywood is unkind to women of a certain age, which is why “Book Club,” which stars Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen as friends trying to make intimate connections late in life, is so refreshing. The woman are all terrific. Sadly, the material they are given is wildly uneven.
In narration provided by Keaton, we are introduced to the characters, who have been gathering for a monthly book club since the 1970s. Keaton is a widower; Bergen is a divorcee who lives with her cat and hasn’t had sex in decades; Steenburgen is in stagnating relationship with Craig T. Nelson; and Fonda is a well-sexed hotel owner who avoids meaningful connection.
