Tomatoes pose a serious challenge to North Country gardeners in the best of years, and during summers such as this one, ripening them on the vine is daunting.

After successive years of too little rain, June and July brought an overabundance. That, coupled with cold early season soils that delayed progress, here in the early days of August, many growers have large, bushy vines but a distinct lack of red fruit. Or, in some cases, lack of fruit of any sort due to poor pollination.
