The Mt. Washington Valley Community Tennis Association gets the ball rolling

The Mt. Washington Valley Community Tennis Association (MWVCTA) recently held its first annual meeting. Members elected the following officers to the board of directors: Nancy Osborne, of Glen, was elected president; vice president is Bob Kimnach, of Kearsarge; secretary/treasurer is Janet Chernick, of Intervale;grants/fund-raising chair is Maureen Soraghan, of North Conway; membership chair is Gail Bentley, of North Conway; and publicity chair is Paula S. Jones, of Center Conway. Founded just eight months ago, MWVCTA is currently teaching tennis at reduced or no cost in two local programs: one is for the Bartlett Rec. Department at its Summer Bear Camp, and the other is for the Conway Rec. Department at Davis Park in its summer program for adults and children. Sign-up sheets can be gotten from director John Eastman at the Conway Rec. Department (john@ConwayRec.com) for the program. Contact Annette Libby, director of the Bartlett Rec. Department for the Bear Camp (ages 5-12) at recbartlett@hotmail.com.For those who already know how to play tennis and want to find someone to play with, the MWVCTA has four evenings a week of free drop-in tennis at two different parks on alternating nights. Come to Davis Park in Conway to join the fun on Mondays and Wednesdays from about 5:30 p.m. until dark, and come to Graustein Park in Fryeburg on Tuesdays and Thursdays also from about 5:30 p.m. until dark. There are as many as 10 people and just play a round-robin format for as long as anyone wants to. Future activities include the MWVCTA's third Tennis Social of the year at Cranmore Family Fitness Center on Aug. 25: a doubles round-robin format complete with dinner in a fun, social atmosphere. Bring your spouse even if they don't play tennis, because there's plenty of time for socializing, too!Contact Nancy Osborne (383-8980 or NCOsborne@adelphia.net) to sign up. The cost is $15 for MWVCTA members, $20 for non-members, and $10 if you're only going to eat and not play. Spaces for players are limited, so sign up soon! The MWVCTA is planning the Valley Classic Tennis Tournament for the weekend of Sept. 14-16 at Cranmore Family Fitness Center. Play is for all levels, with doubles for men, women and mixed couples, with a consolation round for first-round losers and prizes/awards for all finalists. The cost is $15 per event for members; $20 per event for non-members, and each individual is limited to two events. Pick up an entry form at the Cranmore Family Fitness Center. For more information about any of these events, contact Nancy Osborne (see above) or visit our website at www.eteamz.com/MWVCTA.
