CONWAY — The Kennett High girls’ basketball team probably won’t play a more physical game than it did on the road against Pembroke Academy in Concord on Friday night. The host Spartans, in an effort to erase a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit, turned the the final 8 minutes into something other than the sport Dr. James Naismith originally envisioned.

It worked as they were able to close the gap and appeared to have tied the game to force overtime. However, Coach Larry Meader’s knowledge of the rules got the referees to correct a call giving the girls from Conway a hard-fought 40-37 victory in a contest Assistant Coach Steve Cote referred to as “a good old fashion sloberknocker.”
