When I was growing up in the '50s and '60s, I don’t remember seeing my parents or other adults riding bicycles. Bicycles were for kids, not grown-ups.

Gradually, that changed with the fitness movement. In the '50s, the Kraus-Hirschland study found that 60 percent of American children failed at least one test for “minimum muscular fitness,” compared to only 6 percent of European children.
