Two phrases I heard recently amused me. In a cartoon, I saw “touch grass.” On a T-shirt, I saw “I was born in the 1900s.” Since the latter saying described me, I didn’t feel embarrassed to not be familiar with that first modern statement.

In case you’re also a baby boomer, I’ll explain what “touch grass” means. It has nothing to do with cannabis. In this age when young people often become addicted to their screens, “touch grass” is a way of encouraging them to disconnect for a while and go interact with the real world. It’s similar to what my mom said in my TV-addicted 1950s — “Sally, turn that thing off and go outside!”
