In light of yet another death amidst terrible conditions on Mount Washington it might be worth revisiting this article that was published in The Conway Daily Sun about 15 years ago:
Truly experienced and matured climbers are not usually those who need to be rescued on Mount Washington. This is not a coincidence. Nor is it because they are luckier than other climbers. Rather, it is because they operate from a position of great conservatism and they function on a firm foundation of knowledge. This does not mean that experienced climbers are immune to bad luck. Misfortune can strike anyone at any time. However, experienced climbers substantially limit their risk by carrying appropriate gear, by developing contingency plans, and by conservatively functioning within appropriate guidelines of behavior. It is a myth created by the media that climbers are driven purely by thrill and thrive on risky behavior. Mature climbers are masters at limiting risk.
