Looking out over Lake Winnapasaukee from Bald Knob. (ED PARSONS PHOTO)

Spring in the valleys: The melting of snow, the dormant brown ground ready to burst forth with green, the arrival of birds, the sound of the rivers in high water. It is all good after this last blast of snow and electrical outages. The rain this week is setting the stage for the explosion of life.

An old friend and I have a fun habit. We text each other when we see striking signs of spring. A few days ago she texted me on one of her afternoon walks. “Mourning cloak.”
