"Corps of Granite" gives readers a "glimpse" into New Hampshire's CCC Camps. (ED PARSONS PHOTO)

I just read a new book called “Corps of Granite — Glimpses of New Hampshire’s CCC Camps.” It was written by Robert W. Averill of Shelburne Falls, Mass. Extensive research was done by coauthor Kris Pastoriza, who lives in the shadow of Mount Moosilauke.

The Civilian Conservation Corps, run by the U.S. Army, was started by Franklin Delano Roosevelt to put to work unemployed young men during the Depression, often from poor urban families. They received $25 a month. $20 of it was sent home to their families, giving them $5 for spending.
