In a couple of days, I will be heading south for a week of beach going/shell collecting, birding and fishing on Sanibel Island, Fla. It is only for a week, but it will effectively cut the month of February in half; for one whole week I will beat the cold.

True enough, a lot of my friends avoid the entire month and some spend their winter in Florida. I am happy for the week, and for the most part, I am quite content to tough out the long New Hampshire winter.
