North Country Angler - wild brook trout

Larger than anticipated wild brook trout were found in non stocked waters. (STEVE ANGERS PHOTO)

When Fish and Game announced that the number of fish to be stocked in state waters was going to be cut by 40 percent for the 2025 fishing season, everybody held their breath. Of all the good things that can be said about Fish and Game, transparency is not one.

The one “quality” designated trout pond in the valley, Shaw Pond, received 1,500 one-year-old brook trout in early April. The pond received no two-year-old trout. Typically, Shaw is stocked the week before opening day. Was this change to early stocking to let the one-year-old trout get bigger before opening day?
