North Country Angling - new hex nymph pattern

A new hex nymph pattern was a successful addition to the singlemindedness of the season. (STEVE ANGERS PHOTO)

The text messages from the confidential informant were coming in fast and furious. Pictures of large wild brook trout accompanied the text messages. A pond in the Great North Woods had seen the emergence of the hexagenia limbata or hex as it is commonly known to fly anglers.

A plan was formulated to meet one evening and to fish the hex hatch. Visions of big brook trout slurping in big yellow mayflies were at the forefront of this angler’s mind. There is nothing equivalent to this hatch in the northeast many anglers spend the time between the middle of June and the middle of July pond hopping to fish the hex hatch.
